Courses : Foundation training - Play & the Creative Arts Therapies
Application form - LI(F)application.doc Please click the filename to download in Word doc format The Foundation training is a prerequisite for further professional training in play therapy with the Lila Institute. It is also suitable for those who want to pursue further training in another creative arts therapy or psychotherapeutic approach, or for those wishing to enrich their present work as, for example, an artist, teacher, psychotherapist/counsellor or social worker. Alternatively, participants may have no wish for further training but want to engage in their own personal development. The Foundation training will offer the individual an experience of engagement with play in its varied forms, an opportunity to realise their own creative potential for the purpose of self-discovery, enjoyment and self-resourcing, a group process experience and the space to engage in reflective/mindfulness practice. It will incorporate play, drama, voice, dance/movement, art, music, breath work, meditation, non-violent communication and group sharing. The Foundation training also aims to bring together reflective/mindfulness practice and the arts as a resource for healing. It is the intention of the Foundation year to support participants in the realisation of their inherent health and a recognition of the strategies they have evolved that have supported them in their day-to-day living. Creating a psychologically and physically safe environment within which the participants might unfold is regarded as absolutely crucial in this process. How else could someone go on to provide and maintain such an environment for a child in therapy unless they themselves have experienced it first hand? Course Structure We are planning to run two Foundation courses starting October 2010, one will be taught as weekend modules – one per month starting October 16/17 and concluding with a three full day residential weekend in May 2011. The other will be run on a weekly basis (on Wednesdays) starting October 13th and ending with a three full day residential weekend in April 2011. See dates below for both these courses. The residential will be held at the Beacon Centre, Exeter. The purpose of the three-day weekend is to invite each participant to portray, and have witnessed by their colleagues and tutors, their journey throughout the Foundation using the skills acquired and developed during the Foundation training. The Lila Institute is currently exploring university validation for its Masters programme in Play Therapy. This will be a further three year training including infant and child observation, continuing experiential work, theoretical basis for this model in comparison to other models, and clinical, supervised practice. Please note successful completion of the Foundation training does not mean guaranteed entry onto further programmes. Course starting October 13th 2010 This Foundation will be run on a weekly basis on Wednesdays:

Tutors All the facilitators are qualified therapists/psychotherapists in their particular subject. Please go to the Lila Team page for further details. Play Therapy This introduction to person-centred play therapy aims to give participants a basic knowledge integrating theory, practice and experiential workshops. We will explore the essence of play and consider the intrinsic therapeutic value of this medium. We will identify the different stages of play development using the developmental play paradigm. We will also explore the relationship play has to the creative art forms of drama, art, music, voice and dance movement. Dramatherapy In these two days of dramatherapy we will explore the use of metaphor through the medium of fairytales. Relating to our own lives, we will look at the roles we have developed and fostered in our day-to-day interactions and bring some understanding to why we play those roles and if they continue to meet our needs in the present time. Using dramatherapy, we will experiment with new or less familiar roles. We will also draw from our knowledge of characters and themes from ancient mythologies to identify the universality of the human condition. NVC is a process of communication developed by Dr Marshall Rosenberg in the US. NVC helps us to: communicate clearly and kindly, be honest with others without offending, ensure everyone's needs are valued, be fully present with people in distress, resolve conflicts without blame or judgement and become aware of the opinions hidden behind our words. In these two days you will learn the basic principles of NVC and drawing from personal experiences, put these into practice. Integral Voice Therapy The voice expresses how we experience being in the world. It reflects our inhibitions and fears as well as our spontaneity, joy and creative flow. Integral voice therapy works with breath, body, movement and image, enabling voice and self to meet in a unique place. In these two days participants will have an experience of integrating body, mind and voice. Dance Movement Therapy Dance movement therapy is an arts therapy that enables clients to express themselves creatively, foster relationships, work through their difficulties and develop their strengths. Using movement and dance, clients can communicate what they are thinking and feeling in their own unique way. DMT combines the art form of dance and movement with psychotherapeutic models. The therapist may work with rhythm, ritual, storytelling through movement, posture, gesture, mime, movement patterns and shapes. Foundation participants will be supported in exploring the meaning of their movement by linking body awareness to emotional awareness. Music Therapy There are many different approaches to the use of music in therapy depending on the client's need. However, fundamental to all approaches is the development of the therapeutic relationship facilitated by the medium of music. Music can include playing of instruments or singing to explore the world of sound and facilitate personal growth and increased self awareness. In these sessions we will do various music and movement activities, using bodies, voices and instruments. There will also be an extended period of free improvisation with time for reflection afterwards. Students who wish to, may bring instruments with them. The aim is to work at all levels, feeding mind, body and spirit. Art Therapy Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the medium of art as its primary mode of communication. Through the use of the client's image and the therapeutic relationship, the client is able to effect change and personal growth in a safe and facilitating environment. To this end the art therapist is not concerned with a client's experience or skill in art nor does the art therapist use the client's image for diagnostic assessment.
Practice The following skills will be practised throughout the Foundation course: Communicating - listening & talking Assessment Assessment at the end of the Foundation will be a 2,500 word reflective journal of the student's personal process that demonstrates an understanding of the part played by the creative arts therapies in individual and group process. Students will also be invited to create a personal performance piece using the different art forms to be shown to the group and tutors at the final weekend. Personal therapy requirement It is a requirement of the accrediting child psychotherapy body that those individuals wishing to pursue a training undertake regular, weekly personal therapy throughout the length of their training. Should you wish to accredit as a child psychotherapist following successful completion of an MA in Play Therapy, it will be necessary to commence personal therapy during the Foundation training. Participants not wishing to undertake the full play therapy and child psychotherapy training would not be required to have personal therapy, however, personal therapy may offer additional support to individuals' personal growth and development. The Lila Institute would be happy to discuss the personal therapy requirements and suggest the psychotherapeutic models we understand would best complement the Lila approach.
